Annik was up all night, too scared to close her eyes again. She didn’t want to dream again; didn’t want to remember that night. She was tired, which she knew might affect their plans, but she didn’t care at the moment.
She waited for the others to get up, and she didn’t have to wait long. When the clock struck 6, the other Puppets were out of bed so fast that Annik let out a startled yelp. As soon as the hustle-and-bustle settled down, they all faced towards Annik, eager for the plan to work.
“That was… quick,” Annik remarked, unsure of what to make of this.
“We’re supposed to be up and ready everyday at 6:00,” replied Katani. “If we don’t, well, you know…”
“I get the point. So here’s what you have to do. You guys act normal, and stay around the door area as much as possible. As soon as the clock rings 11:45, you exit through the door in groups, with one of each element. The last ones to leave should be the door keepers. Then, just get as far away as possible from this place. Got it?”
Everyone grinned and nodded, with some of them crossing their fingers. A couple of them looked a little nervous, but shakily smiled and concurred.
“Good. Now go start your day, while I’m getting tutored on how to do stuff around here.”
They all ran off into their stations, while Annik waited for Nathaniel or Drake to come. As she sat there, she thought out her plan again, hoping that it would work. The doorknob rattled open and there stood both of the men, looking at her in slight disdain.
“Come on,” said Drake heaving her up by one arm. “We’re going to go see the master.” Nathaniel took the other arm and they walked towards Kara’s room.
‘Oh crap,’ thought Annik. ‘This isn’t going to be good.’
They entered the room, and Kara was sitting, looking impatient.
“You’re late,” she icily remarked, motioning for Annik to be seated in a chair directly across the desk.
“We’re sorry, Miss,” apologized Nathaniel, bowing his head. “We did not think the latest Puppet would put up so much resistance.”
“Elemental?” asked Kara, suddenly interested.
‘Please, don’t be…’ prayed Annik.
“Nope, but still interesting enough,” said Drake, and Annik sighed in relief. Kara was disappointed though.
“We can still use it for our show though. And that reminds me, I better get to business,” dismissed Kara, shooing away the two men. The both bowed slightly and left the room.
“Now then. We have no spaces in here, so I decided to put you in our little show. The controller is a master, and if you misbehave in the middle of the play, you’ll be punished. Understand?”
“But wait… aren’t I supposed to learn lines or something? Or learn the actions?”
“Silence! It’s a Puppet show. That means you will have no control over what you will do, and the controller will do your lines. All you have to do is make sure you let yourself be manipulated. You leave at 11:00. Do not be late,” and with that, Annik was dismissed.
“Damn it!” cursed Annik under her breath. “Now I have to change the plan mid- way!” and she ran off to find the other Puppets to tell them the change in plans.
