Jamie and Syelina 5

“That was fun,” remarked Syelina. “Remind me to use that trick the next time I get caught. I’m not saying I’m planning to get jailed again anytime soon though, so don’t get any ideas in that skull of yours.”
She stripped the unconscious guard of his weapons, and handed a baton to Jamie, while taking another for herself. “Ready?”
“Wait. Shush!” whispered Jamie, and they could hear the second guard coming down the hallway.
“Lucas? Are you ok? I heard some noise- ACK!” he exclaimed as Jamie and Syelina came at him with weapons raised. He was down for the count in seconds.
“Quick, find the keys!” hissed Jamie, and they both searched Julius’s uniform.
After a few minutes of searching and slowly panicking, they hit the jackpot. “Got it!” crowed Syelina in triumph, taking a ring of keys out of the guard’s pocket. “Now which one is it?”
“The small black one,” replied Jamie, and Syelina gave him a funny look. “What? I’m observant,” he explained, and was met with a shrug.
As they got up, vortex free, Jamie flexed his fingers, and smiled. “Ahhh… power again.”
“Remember. No more partnerships in the future,” reminded Syelina, her air currents flowing around her again.
“Don’t worry. I won’t forget,” retorted Jamie. “Now could you just get us out of here?”
Syelina rolled her eyes. Gathering the currents around herself, she formed a small ball of wind. Tossing it back and forth, she searched for a weak spot in the walls. Then she noticed the corner with all of the cracks forming around it.
She whipped the ball at the corner and yelled at Jamie, “Get out of the way!”
Shards of stone and plaster exploded all around the unlikely allies, and they artfully dodged the projectiles. As they approached the wall, they could hear the running footsteps coming down the stairs and the hallways.
“Ladies first, Syelina,” Jamie said, with a mocking bow.
“This is the worst scenario to be ironic, Jamie,” she snapped, but smiled. She crawled through the opening.
“Dusting herself off and picking pieces of plaster out of her hair, she stood up in the cool night. She could taste the freedom in the air, and she gave the smallest smile. ‘Oh, you better watch yourself, Kuro. I’m free, and out for revenge,’ Syelina thought to herself. She could hear the baying of dogs, but they were too far away to make her anxious yet.
“Hello?” asked Jamie, waving his hand in front of her face.
“What, you idiot?” annoyed, she glared at him, her pale eyes flashing.
“That’s the second time someone called me an idiot today. Anyways, we have to get going now, unless you want to get caught,” said Jamie, clearly on edge, rocking back and forth on his heels.
“I’ve never seen you this nervous before,” she remarked. “But you’re right, we have to leave.” The dogs were getting closer, as well as human and Puppet voices.
They started to split and head to different exits when Syelina called out, “Jamie!”
He stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Yes?”
“I… thanks for helping getting me out,” she said, slightly flustered about saying this to her worst enemy.
“Never thought I’d see the day when you would actually thank me. And besides, we still make a good team, after all these years,” he said, while backing towards the exit.
“Humph. No way! This was a one time only thing, remember?” she retorted. Jamie shrugged his shoulders, and ran off towards the exit. She gave a small wave, than ran towards the outside walls. She looked behind her, but Jamie was nowhere in sight.
Clambering up the walls, Syelina sat on top and watched the search party walk past under her feet. As she sat, the wind blowing through her hair, she thought of Jamie’s comment. She knew he was right about them making a good team, but trusting him again was hard, especially with years of revenge and anger between them. But still, he was sly and determined, with only a few faults. ‘Perhaps,’ she thought, ‘it’s time we teamed up for good.’
